Sustainable rural development is possible only thorough positive participation of the people at the grassroots level. In planning of any project, it is ICA's policy to repeatedly carry out leadership training programs that facilitate motivation and commitment of the participants. However, the leadership training does not aim to foster only a small number of leaders. It aims to bring each one of the participant's awareness as a member of the project, with firm commitment and confidence.

Participants met in Kitui for 4 days in August, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. using the ICA curriculum to train community leaders. In sessions such as Vision Workshop, committee members and villagers collaborated to work on a similar vision, discussing issues and exchanging opinions.

Building capacity can fosterleadership. ICA views capacity building as a wholistic process of identifying one's own qualities and how they interact with others. Thus we offer Transformational Capacity Training, and workshops on personal styles and sustainability.

A 4-day training in August brought together all ICA Kitui and Nairobi staff with staff from ICA Japan.

ICA's Personal Style training allows participants to assess their own styles so that they can cooperate with others and improve interpersonal relationships. Role plays helped illustrate this valuable tool of interaction.

ICA facilitators progress training in the local language. Training of the Trainer (TOT) allows committee and community members to in turn train those who cannot attend.

Participants work together to create a 4-day schedule based on their needs and expectations.

ICA Japan Director Mrs. Shizuyo Sato discusses the project future with an ICA Kitui agricultural staff. Community's perception of the project's future will promote its sustainability.

The second training session, for 4 days in October, built on what was learned in August. Further sessions included, Shaping the Future, 21st Century Leader, and Customer Service.

Participants plot their personal styles on a board to help them gain understanding of themselves and each other, and improve their interactions.

A US volunteer and ICA secretary collect the sheets used in the workshops. These sheets containing community opinions will be typed up and saved as an invaluable reference for the future.

ICA Japan Co-Director Mr. Wayne Ellsworth distributes certificates of achievement to those who completed the training. "Next time I want to participate in two weeks of training," said one participant.
