Peach Tree Grafting

The people of Cochamarca and Colcapampa started raising peach trees in community land in order to raise fund to initiate community development project by themselves. In the first year people of Cochamarca raised root stocks at the nursery in the village. This year we conducted technology transfer for fruit tree grafting. The scions for grafting were collected at the experimental farm in Chincha, and its quality is guaranteed. The agronomist is Mr. Borjas who acquired the technique through the instruction of Japanese agronomist.

Let's observe the procedure of grafting. First of all, you have to disinfect the tools to maximize the survival rate of grafted seedlings. The process is very simple: you cut the scion and root stock in a wedge shape, and combine them in a way the parts with active cell division are attached tightly.

Fix the joint with teflon tape, and leave for a few weeks with a plastic bag covering it. Once acquired, the task is easy to conduct, but it is necessary process to harvest the fruit with enough quality. Traditionally they had never done this treatment, and therefore, the quality of fruits are not good for receiving appropriate price in the market.

The teacher and his students who would manage the grafted trees received the instruction in this field activity in Cochamarca. Maize is raised in the same field so that they can fully utilize the scarce field until the seedlings grow up enough to bear the fruits.

Almost thousand root stocks were grafted in Cochamarca and Colcapampa. In Cochamarca they will not have difficulty in obtaining fertilizer because recently biodigester was constructed near the nursery and field. The students are watering the seedlings until they grow enough.
